VDS Workshop call for participation: Design Challenges for Future Mobile Learning Environments
This is an invitation to PhD candidates to participate in the Kaleidoscope Virtual Doctoral School (VDS) Workshop “Design Challenges for Future Mobile Learning Environments”. The purpose of this VDS workshop is to elaborate and explore those aspects related to the design, implementation and evaluation of future learning environments supported by mobile technologies. The workshop is mainly aimed at PhD students within the Kaleidoscope Mobile Learning SIG who are conducting their research projects within the field of mobile learning. The number of participants for this workshop will be limited to 15 students. Participants will be carefully selected based on the relevance of their own research in connection to the main focus of this workshop.
Scope and Themes
The central questions that will be explored at the workshop are:
What are the important research questions relating to mobile learning?
Which learning aspects and processes should be considered while designing challenging
mobile learning environments?
What new scenarios and applications will emerge, and how they should be implemented?
What are appropriate methods to research the design and evaluation of mobile learning
environments?
Which are the most appropriate ways of assessing learning in these environments?
One aim of the workshop is to address and explore these questions. Considering the contextualized
and situated nature of learning, answers to these questions need to be adapted to local circumstances
and project specific purposes. Therefore, the primary aim of the workshop is to share and discuss on-
going research activities and results through a series of interactive sessions and seminars. As a
complement to these activities, there will be a small number of invited presentations from well
recognized experts in the field.
Organization
The workshop will consist of several activities: The main activity will be the participant presentations,
but in addition there will be three invited speakers introducing and describing relevant theoretical and
methodological perspectives related to the focus of the workshop. Invited guests who will act as
lecturers and facilitators throughout the workshop are:
Russell Beale, School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, UK
Mike Sharples, Learning Sciences Research Institute, University of Nottingham, UK
Giasemi Vavoula, Department of Museum Studies, University of Leicester, UK
These activities will be followed up by a Future Technology Workshop (FTW) in which all participants
will be actively involved in designing future mobile learning scenarios having in mind those aspects
related not only to design but also to implementation and evaluation. We plan to conclude this
workshop with a plenary session in which we will discuss about appropriate methods to research,
design and evaluate mobile learning.
The participants will give a short presentation of their area of research with concrete examples of their
work including illustrative materials (posters, videos or a working prototype). Each presentation will be
followed by a session for relevant discussion. The main language of the workshop will be English. The
participants will submit in advance an abstract of their research project, as well as descriptions of the
material they will be presenting. Where possible these presentations will be organised into themed
sessions to match the invited speaker.
Applications and Conditions
Those PhD students interested in taking part of this workshop should send one page summary
describing his/her own area of research. The application should be submitted as a PDF or Word
document to marcelo.milrad@msi.vxu.se no later than October 12th 2007. Notification to
participants will be given by October 16th 2007. The VDS is supporting the workshop with grants for
each PhD student that will cover hotel accommodation and daily meals for this event. Travel fares
should be covered by the students ́ home university and it may be possible to claim a reimbursement
from their own Kaleidoscope budget.
The Workshop will be held in Växjö, Sweden and it will start on November 1st at 09:00 am. The event
will finalize on November 2nd at 17:30. More information about how to travel to Växjö University can
be found at http://www.celekt.info/static/contact. PhD students outside Kaleidoscope and the VDS are
welcome to participate at their own expenses.
Organising and steering committee
The workshop is a joint effort of the Virtual Doctoral School (VDS) and the Kaleidoscope Mobile
Learning SIG. The workshop will be organised by the Center for Learning and Knowledge
Technologies (CeLeKT, http://www.celekt.info) at Växjö University in Sweden. CeLeKT's research
focuses on areas such as interactive media, computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and
innovative design of wireless and mobile systems to support teaching and learning. CeLeKT belongs to
the School of Mathematics and Systems Engineering (MSI). Organising and steering committee people
are:
Marcelo Milrad, Växjö University, Sweden
Inmaculada Arnedillo-Sánchez, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland
Mike Sharples, University of Nottingham, UK
Barbara Wasson, University of Bergen, Norway
Jocelyn Wishart, University of Bristol, UK
Cecilia Ericsson, Research Secretary, MSI, Växjö University, Sweden
